Andrei Soltoianu Becomes the Fourth Member of Moldova’s Davis Cup Team
Andrei Soltoianu, a tennis player who has been living in Germany in recent years, won a mini-tournament featuring three other contenders to earn a place on Moldova’s Davis Cup team.
Soltoianu was officially included in the national team after his victory in the qualifying mini-tournament, which took place in Chișinău. The 22-year-old defeated all three of his rivals for the spot—Egor Matveevich, Dmitri Baskov, and Maxim Bulat. In the final match, Soltoianu beat Bulat in two sets: 7–6, 6–4.
“I’ve known this young man since childhood. When he trained and played in Moldova, he was always dedicated and responsible during training camps,”
said Marina Tauber, President of the Tennis Federation of Moldova.
“As for the qualifying mini-tournament, I was pleasantly surprised by the level of tennis shown here,” she added.
Sholtoianu will join Radu Albot, Andrei Chumak, and Alexander Kozbinov on the national team. Of these players, only two are currently ranked by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). Albot is ranked 127th, and Chumak holds position 1781.
Moldova competes in Group III of the Davis Cup Euro-African Zone. In March, the team will travel to Estonia to participate in a tournament featuring 16 national teams, all vying for promotion to Group II. The teams will be divided into four groups, and the top two teams overall will earn advancement.
Among the 16 participating countries, Moldova holds the highest Davis Cup ranking, currently sitting at 52nd place.
The matches will take place in Tallinn from March 2 to March 6.
